The University of Los Angeles School of Nursing was established in 1949. Its focus is teaching the scientific aspects of nursing, research and leadership. UCLA has a medical center where students can obtain clinical experience. The school offers nursing degree programs for bachelor of science, master's of science in nursing (M.S.N.) and doctor of philosophy (Ph.D.) degree programs. Also available are two undergraduate degree programs: nursing B.S. (generic/prelicensure) and nursing B.S. (RN to B.S./post-licensure). The generic/prelicensure program is offered to students who aspire to become registered nurses. The R.N. to B.S./post program is for registered nurses who have associate's degrees or diploma qualifications and wish to pursue their bachelor's and master's degree in three years. This is a professional, accredited school.
The Preferred College of Nursing offers programs in vocational nursing, nursing assistant and home health aid. Courses offered run full-time Monday to Friday, twice a week or on weekends. Program duration for the VN course is 1,550 hours, and 150 hours for the NA/HHA. Student aid is available for those who qualify. Clinical facilities for use by the students are located in affiliated hospitals within a radius of 25 miles of the school.
The Central Nursing College in LA was founded in 1995 and is an accredited school. Its methods of instruction include a competency-based module system that develops from previously learned modules in the first term. Instruction takes place through practical demonstrations, lectures and labwork. The program leads to a position as a licensed vocational nurse (LVN). In the second term the students are introduced to the ATI method for NCLEX-PN preparation, which consists of computer-based exams and lectures and emphasizes critical thinking.
The Angeles College of Nursing's mission is to train and educate multi-ethnic and bi-lingual people as healthcare professionals. The classes are small, consisting of no more than 15 students. The programs and the college are approved by the Bureau for Postsecondary and Vocational Education. The programs and courses offered include home health aide (HHA); nursing assistant (NA); phlebotomy technician; phlebotomy technician -- advanced; vocational nursing (VN); and English as a second language. ACN awards its graduates a certificate of completion upon successful completion the course. The school does not offer student financial assistance.
