California Photography Schools

California has a photography education system because of its strong film and TV production industry and Hollywood. Los Angeles and Hollywood are the two main places in the state to be if you are interested in a commercial career in photography; San Francisco and San Diego are also good options. There are several schools that regularly accept students from the U.S. and around the world. They do not have a cap on how many out of state students they can accept.
  1. The Art Institutes (Multiple Campuses)

    • The Art Institutes have over 40 locations throughout the United States. In California they have six locations, including ones in Orange County and Los Angeles. They offer associate, bachelor's and certificate programs. They have specializations in digital production, film and photography.

    The International Academy of Design Technology (IADT)

    • The IADT offers programs in digital photography and visual communications as their primary areas of focus. The IADT is well-known for being active in placing graduates in related job areas, as they ensure that all students are given a chance to have a work-study period for a maximum of two semesters as part of their curriculum. Degrees include a master's, a bachelor's and an associate option. The IADT is located in Sacramento California.

    The Academy of Art University

    • The Academy of Art University is located in San Francisco California. It is a private art and design university that was first founded by artists in 1929. They are an accredited institution, and offer degrees at the associate, a bachelor and master level. They also offer certificate programs and continuing education programs in arts studies, with specializations in photography, video and digital media production. It is also possible to combine two of the specializations to have a double focus for a single degree. This option is not availalbe for certificate programs.

    The Brooks Institute

    • The Brooks Institute offers bachelor degree programs in photography, visual journalism, film studies and graphic design. These programs are part of the Digital Photography School. MFA programs are available in photography and film studies. There are also certificate programs available for continuing education students. Programs in continuing education studies includes certificate programs in wedding photography and digital cinema. The Brooks Institute is located in Santa Barbara California.
