Careers in criminal justice can be a rewarding way to serve your community, and a college degree in criminal justice is often the right starting point. The starting salary for a Los Angeles Police Department officer with a bachelor's degree is over $3,500 more than the starting pay for someone who only has a high school diploma.     • Cal State L.A. is a four-year public university with an enrollment of 21,000 students. Cal State L.A. reports that its criminal justice major has one of the highest enrollments of its more than 60 undergraduate programs. The School of Criminal Justice and Criminalistics at Cal State L.A. offers bachelor's degrees as well as master's degrees in criminal justice. Both programs prepare students for successful careers in law enforcement, corrections, criminal justice planning and law.

    Westwood College---Los Angeles

    • Since 1999, Westwood College---Los Angeles is a private technical college in the Mid-Wilshire District. The campus is close to the Staples Center and only minutes from downtown Los Angeles. The Los Angeles campus is one of four Westwood College campuses in California that offers a bachelor's degree in criminal justice. Course topics covered in the criminal justice program include criminal law, probation and parole, crisis intervention, crime scene investigation, victimology, terrorism, women and criminal justice, domestic violence, gangs and computer crime.

    California State University, Dominguez Hills

    • Founded in 1960, California State University, Dominguez Hills is a public four-year university in Carson, only minutes from downtown Los Angeles and South Bay beaches. CSUDH offers 45 undergraduate majors and 24 master's degree programs, including a bachelor of science degree in criminal justice administration, as well as an undergraduate minor. The bachelor's degree program prepares students for careers in the private, public and nonprofit sectors, including national and local law enforcement, law, corrections, juvenile justice and homeland security. Program requirements include two lower division courses in the Department of Public Administration and Public Policy, upper division criminal justice administration courses and four electives.

    Los Angeles Mission College

    • Los Angeles Mission College is a public two-year community college located in Sylmar, about 20 miles from Los Angeles. At Mission College, students can complete a two-year associate of science degree in administration of justice, or an occupational certificate program. For students interested in pursuing a bachelor's degree in the future, most administration of justice courses at Mission College are also transferable to the Cal State or University of California system.
