Criminal Justice Corrections Schools

Criminal justice degree programs include courses on subjects that range from policing practices and the court system to juvenile justice and corrections. Individuals with a degree in criminal justice can choose between a wide variety of career options, including one in corrections. Individuals that wish to pursue a career in corrections have several options when seeking out a criminal justice program.

    • The University of Phoenix offers criminal justice degrees at the associate's, bachelor's and master's level. Policing practices, corrections, the criminal court system, and juvenile justice are the main focuses for students at the associate's level while students at the bachelor's and master's level build off these foundations by learning about the relationship between criminal justice and the citizenry and the structure of the criminal justice system itself. Students can then take this education into the field of corrections if they so choose. The University of Phoenix offers both online and in-class courses in criminal justice.

    Rasmussen College

    • Rasmussen College offers an associate's degree in criminal justice with an emphasis on corrections. According to the Rasmussen College website, corrections students will study the "critical thinking, ethical understanding, multicultural and diversity awareness, and communication skills" necessary to succeed in the field of corrections. On top of the core criminal justice courses, corrections courses include "Case Management," which focuses on instructing students in the proper way to handle paperwork involved in corrections, "Counseling Clients," which instructs students in the methods of counseling and rehabilitating in a number of different settings and "Legal Principles," which looks at the legal documents behind corrections.

    East Kentucky University

    • East Kentucky University offers students several different programs that focus on corrections, including a bachelor's and master's degree and professional certificate in correctional intervention strategies, professional certificate in youth services and a graduate certificate in juvenile justice or correctional leadership. Core courses include "Foundations of Correctional and Juvenile Justice Practice" and "Rehabilitation Strategies for Adult and Juvenile Offenders" on top of the adult and youth corrections-specific courses. The East Kentucky University corrections programs are only offered online.

    Kaplan College

    • Kaplan College's School of Criminal Justice offers students an online Corrections Professional Certificate program designed for entry-level officers and experienced officers alike. The program asks students to investigate the court and prison systems as well as the administration, operation and objectives of corrections through courses such as "Legal Issues in Corrections," "Critical Issues in Corrections" and "Criminal Origins and Correctional Alternatives." Graduates will be prepared to find work in a local, state or federal corrections facility.
