One school offering an accelerated 12-month BSN program is Creighton University in Omaha, Neb. This program is a second degree program for students entering the field from another academic background. Creighton is an established Catholic Jesuit university and has been offering accelerated nursing programs for over 30 years. Students take rigorous courses designed to prepare them for a quick transition to the field. Courses include those in the areas of health assessment, pathophysiology, nursing management of pharmacotherapy, research and evidence-based practice and health care management and leadership, among others. A number of nursing practicums are also required.

The accelerated program at Texas Tech University is also a second degree program that can be completed in just 12 months and requires 61 credit hours. Students must complete the proper prerequisite courses in pathophysiology, microbiology, anatomy and physiology, statistics, nutrition science and other courses such as history and sociology. The program is a mixture of clinical training programs and classroom courses. Courses include pharmacology, health assessment, nursing of the developing family, foundational concepts of nursing practice, concepts of chronic care nursing, mental health nursing, nursing research, health promotion and teaching in nursing, management and leadership in nursing and concepts of acute care nursing.

Queens University, located in Charlotte, N.C., is lesser known than Creighton and Texas Tech, but it offers students the advantage of a fully accredited 12-month BSN program as well. Queens University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Its 12-month BSN program also requires various prerequisite courses in anatomy and physiology, microbiology, nutrition and statistics, among others. Courses of study required as part of the BSN program include the art and science of nursing, pharmacological interventions, health assessment across the lifespan, pathophysiology and principles of nursing practice.
