Located in Baltimore, Maryland, Johns Hopkins University--through its School of Nursing--offers a RN-to-BS program that consists of 60 credits. This is half of the number of credits for the regular BS track. Students take classes that mix coursework in the natural sciences, social sciences and humanities, with a mandatory statistics class and up to 16 credits in electives from any academic discipline. RNs with associate degrees in nursing who already have other bachelor's degrees only need five courses to complete JHU's program.

At UCLA, students need 180 credits to complete its ASN-to-BSN program, and this can take four years and two summer semesters to do so. Candidates, however, can transfer up to 74 credits from the coursework for their associate degrees. At its School of Nursing website, UCLA strongly recommends that candidates take a preparatory course in chemistry before admission.

Established in 1976, University of Phoenix focuses mainly on providing online education for busy, working adults. Its ASN-to-BSN, which can be taken at the student's own pace, tends to be shorter than programs at brick-and-mortar schools. The capstone -- in-person clinical experience in the student's geographical area -- synthesizes all the academic and practical knowledge that students have acquired from the program, which is accredited by the Commission on College Nursing Education (CCNE).
