Distance Learning Master's Programs

Individuals who seek to complete a master's degree, either for career advancement, preparation for further studies or a career change, can take advantage of distance learning master's programs. These programs can be completed online and students communicate with classmates via email and web chats. Participants in distance learning master's programs can earn a graduate degree while keeping up with work or family commitments.
  1. Gonzaga University

    • Gonzaga University's online Master of Arts in Communication prepares graduates for careers in advertising, public relations and marketing as well as doctoral studies in communication. The 36-credit degree consists of core courses including organizational leadership, international communications and communication ethics. In addition to core courses, students take two elective seminars and a research course. A master's thesis or final project is submitted during the final semester of the program. Applicants to the master's program in communications submit undergraduate transcripts, two recommendation letters, standardized test scores and a personal statement.

    Drexel University

    • The online Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) program at Drexel University is designed to be completed in two years of part-time study. Students can select from several concentration areas including finance, entrepreneurship and engineering management. Students participate in online seminars with classmates and professors; they also attend three on-site seminars at Drexel's Philadelphia campus. The program consists of 51 credits; students complete a Capstone project during the final term. The online degree program is open to students with a bachelor's degree and a minimum G.P.A. of 3.0 is required. Applicants submit undergraduate transcripts, standardized test scores, an essay, a resume and two recommendations. Drexel notes on its website that applications to the online M.B.A. program are accepted on a rolling basis.

    University of Texas

    • The University of Texas offers a Master of Social Work (M.S.W.) degree that can be completed online on a part-time basis. Prospective students with bachelor's degrees in social work can apply for advanced standing; a regular track is available for students with undergraduate degrees in fields other than social work. Students in the program participate in web-based chats and attend online classes. Students with advanced standing must complete 36 credits, and the regular track consists of 62 credits. Coursework covers topics such as social work practice, organizational development and administrative leadership. In addition to coursework, students complete an internship in their area.

    University of Southern California

    • The Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) at the University of Southern California is available in an online format that can be completed in one year of full-time or two to three years of part-time study. Students in the program take foundational courses that cover topics such as sociology, psychology and using technology in the classroom. In addition, they learn how to teach students from diverse populations and complete supervised field experiences at schools in their area. Students can select from concentrations in science, social studies, math, English or multiple subjects. Graduates earn a California teaching credential that can be transferred to another state through a reciprocity agreement.

      Interested applicants should submit undergraduate transcripts, at least two recommendations and personal essays.
