Distance Learning K-12 Programs

Distance learning has become increasingly popular among colleges and universities. Although it has yet to catch on with the same level of popularity for school children in grades K-12, a number of distance learning K-12 schools have started to gain in popularity as some parents seek alternatives to the public school option. Some parents, unequipped to provide homeschooling to their children, have found distance learning as a more viable option.
  1. Oklahoma Virtual Academy

    • Oklahoma Virtual Academy, OKVA, located in Vinita, uses the K-12 distance learning curriculum found at K12.com. OKVA is part of the state of Oklahoma's White Oak and Wynona public school districts. It offers courses of study for grades 1-8 through White Oak and 9-10 through Wynona. Students using the K12 curriculum through OKVA can complete their coursework anywhere they can connect to the internet. Students learn through the use of interactive online tools and through corresponding via email and the telephone. All teachers are state certified. The curriculum can be individualized for students and the program at OKVA is offered tuition-free.

    Manhattan School of Music

    • For parents that may want to expose their children to cultural education, the Manhattan School of Music offers courses in music instruction for children in grades K-12. The school has been offering distance education courses through video-conferencing for over a decade. Students have the opportunity to work with various professional musicians in courses in music performance, understanding the basic elements of music, vocal music and instrumental music. Some of the programs offered through the school are offered on-demand, so that students can take the courses at any time. Courses vary in price and length. Prices for individual courses range from $250 to $300, as of August 2010.

    Forest Trail Academy

    • Forest Trail Academy, FTA, in Florida offers a third option for distance learning for children in the K-12 grade range. FTA offers students the opportunity to pursue education 365 days per year and the school is accredited by the Florida Department of Education. All teachers are fully certified and qualified to teach in their respective states of residence. Students at Forest Trail Academy can take the high school equivalency exam or receive one of three different diplomas in the areas of general education, vocational training or college preparation. Areas of study covered by FTC include business, math, social studies, science, physical education, fine arts, foreign languages and many others. Tuition varies depending on which program students are enrolled in. Tuition ranged from $675 to $2,195 per year as of August 2010.
