Low residency MFA distance learning programs are programs in which you get your MFA through mostly independent study, coupled with a short residency each semester. Most programs are structured so that students have a period of residency, usually anywhere from ten days to two weeks, at a campus at the beginning of the semester. During the residency, students take classes, meet with mentors, do coursework, and plan their semester. After the residency is over, students return home and complete the rest of the semester online or through distance learning by mail. Each student has a list of requirements, assignments, and tests that are due during a particular semester. The student works with a mentor or with a group of teachers during the semester to complete the coursework independently.
MFA distance learning programs that do not incorporate a residency are done entirely independently, either online or through regular mail. Students are given a list of coursework that is due during the semester, and they are in charge of completing the work on their own. Depending on the type of MFA they are working toward, they might participate in online discussions with other class members, watch online videos from teachers, do quizzes and take tests. Assignments all have due dates, and it is up to each student to complete them as required.
The requirements for entering a distance learning MFA program are typically the same as entering a regular MFA program. Students must have a bachelor's degree. Most programs do not require a degree in the field in which students hope to achieve an MFA, but some of them want either the same field or a related one. Most distance learning MFA programs check transcripts, look at references, and have a list of grade point averages and courses taken that are required for admission.
MFA distance learning programs are good for students who have other things going on in their lives and can't commit to going to school full time. The work can be done independently, during evenings or weekends, or any time that the student chooses. Also, the MFA degrees obtained from distance learning programs are exactly the same as MFA degrees obtained on other campuses.
MFA degrees can be anything from a Masters of Fine Arts in writing, art history, education, English, music, or anything else considered to be an art. Almost any type of MFA degree is now found as a distance learning MFA degree.
