Many people feel that distance learning provides greater flexibility and convenience for both students and instructors. Because many of the technologies that are necessary for distance learning are accessible from the home, such as the Internet and telephone, studying independently allows students to work on a more flexible schedule, allowing the time to participate whenever is most convenient. For example, one student may prefer to study during the day, while another student may wish to study later in the evening. Distance learning allows this flexibility and convenience while still adhering to set deadlines and goals throughout the course.
Distance learning environments lack the direct human interaction that makes it possible for instructors to determine when students have fully grasped a concept. Because many students study online when attending a distance learning program, most will never meet their professors face-to-face. Interaction with an instructor is important, because even the most complete and authoritative course materials cannot replace explanation by an instructor in order to turn information into retained knowledge.
It is believed that distance learning is more economical for both students and instructors. Because students are able to research information online, they can gain knowledge with little to no additional cost. Many students are also able to avoid living on campus or in student housing away from home, allowing them to save extra money, while still furthering their education.
Distance learning may not be as easy as a traditional learning environment. This is because both students and teachers must be able to adjust to a different style of learning and must exhibit self-discipline in order to complete assessments and tasks on time. Some students may fall behind in the course and eventually fail or drop out because they are unable to handle independent learning. Other students require instructor explanations and face-to-face interaction with peers, and the absence of this interaction can make the course more difficult for the student to comprehend.
