Distance Learning at the University of Virginia

In the 2009 to 2010 school year, more than 20,000 students attended the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. However, because the traditional college experience doesn't work for every student, UVA offers classes through its School of Continuing and Professional Studies. This school provides education options for non-traditional students on six campuses throughout the state.

    • During the 2008 to 2009 school year, UVA's School of Continuing and Professional Studies boasted an enrollment of 14,655 students, and 85 percent of those students lived in the state of Virginia. The school offers 1,500 courses every year, taught by more than 200 full-time faculty members and 512 adjunct faculty members.

    Campuses

    • UVA's School of Continuing and Professional Studies has six campus locations throughout the state, referred to as "centers." Students can attend centers in Hampton Roads, Northern Virginia in Falls Church, Richmond, Roanoke, Southwest Virginia in Abingdon and Charlottesville.

    Degrees

    • UVA offers a part-time bachelor of information studies degree for working adults. Students can attend the main campus in Charlottesville or satellite campuses in Virginia Beach and Alexandria for this degree. The School of Continuing and Professional Studies also offers certificates that provide students with discipline-specific skills that that help them in their careers. Distance-learning master's degrees are also available in conjunction with the main campus in Charlottesville.

    Programs

    • UVA's School of Continuing and Professional Studies offers graduate and undergraduate certificates and degrees in a wide array of fields. Undergraduate online certificate programs are available in human resources and information technology, and students can earn graduate certificates online in fields that include project management and public administration. On-site certificates at distance-learning centers include accounting, criminal justice and workforce development.

      Distance-learning students work also have the opportunity to work in conjunction with UVA's main campuses colleges, including the Curry School of Education and School of Engineering and Applied Science, to earn graduate degrees in education and engineering.

    Online Courses

    • The School of Continuing and Professional Studies offers some courses and programs online, allowing students from anywhere in the country to log on and go to class. Online courses are available in a variety of programs, including marketing, information technology and human resources. Courses, such as Legal Aspects of eMarketing, Advanced Web Technologies and Strategic Compensation, are available online, according to the school's summer 2010 Schedule of Online Classes handbook.
