The Pitfalls of Distance Learning

Distance learning allows students to take a class or complete a certificate or degree from home. For many students, this is an ideal way to learn while balancing work and family commitments. While many students enjoy the flexibility of distance learning, there are a number of potential pitfalls for distance and online learners.
  1. Time Management

    • Paper or electronic planners can help distance learners with time management.

Time management is a very important skill for distance learners. While students in a traditional classroom usually have to follow a rigid schedule, distance learners are often required to complete lessons and assignments on their own time. Distance learners should set and stick to a schedule for their studies, keeping in mind all outside commitments.

    Lack of Interaction

    • For some distance learners, a lack of interaction with fellow students and instructors may hinder learning. Students who miss interaction with others should use class message boards and other tools to interact and share ideas with classmates. They should also communicate with instructors regularly via email or telephone.

    Credibility

    • While there are many highly recommended online and distance-learning opportunities, potential distance learners should take time to research a program before they enroll. Check the United States Department of Education's online database of accredited universities before enrolling. Students hoping to advance their career because of their degree should also do some research about career advancement of alumni of the program, and think about how a potential employer might view the online degree. Many traditional colleges also offer online programs, which might seem more credible to some potential employers.

    Technology

    • Students considering online coursework should be fairly comfortable with computers and technology. Otherwise, students can find themselves spending more time trying to understand the technology needed to access lessons, communicate with teachers, and submit assignments than they do on their actual learning. Potential students should do some research and be sure they are comfortable with any necessary technology before enrolling.
