One of the nation's leaders in online education, Capella University offers a multitude of degree programs. Many of these degree programs are in the area of psychology and counseling. Capella offers a master of science degree in the area of marriage and family therapy. Because of the interpersonal nature of the counseling discipline, students must complete some residency requirements and field experience in addition to online coursework. Northcentral University offers a doctorate in Marriage and Family Therapy. Within the program, Northcentral offers five different areas of specialization: child and adolescent therapy, therapy with military families, couples therapy, medical family therapy and general family therapy. The various degree programs require coursework in theory and research along with courses that are specific to each degree option. Common courses of study include research methods in MFT, advanced MFT theory, statistical research design, advanced assessment and intervention, quantitative research, systematic sex therapy, treating infidelity and sexual addiction and advanced data analysis.

Walden University offers a Master of Science in Marriage, Couple and Family Counseling. Walden's degree program emphasizes systems theory and prepares students to work in a variety of cultural settings. Within the program, Walden also offers specializations in trauma and crisis counseling along with forensic counseling. The degree program requires the completion of 90 quarter credits and two six-day residencies.
