PhD Programs in Industrial Organizational Psychology

Michigan State University

• Industrial organizational psychology is one of six graduate programs offered by the department of psychology at Michigan State University. This program was ranked as the best psychology program in I/O in 2009 by the U.S. News & World Report. It provides flexibility for students to complete other courses related to psychology, but not necessarily to I/O. Students are expected to obtain their master's degree in the second year, complete exams in the third and complete their internship and dissertation in the fourth and fifth years. Research is a major focus, as students must be involved with a research project at all times. There are opportunities for assistantships in which students receive a stipend for about $15,000.

Pennsylvania State University-University Park

• Ranked as the second best in the nation by U.S. News & World Report in 2009, Pennsylvania State University's industrial organizational psychology program offers the opportunity to combine several disciplines in one program. Requirements are five core I/O courses, two special topics seminars in I/O, two quantitative methods courses, two 500-level psychology courses outside of I/O, a minimum of two research projects, a two-part comprehensive exam and a six-consecutive-semester I/O practicum. Students have the flexibility to begin the program with a master's degree or previous graduate course work. This program requires research experience for two semesters working with I/O faculty. The research can be done as an assistantship or project.

University of South Florida

• The industrial organizational psychology program at the University of South Florida is one of three Ph.D. programs offered in the psychology department. Entrance is very competitive as the program accepts only 18 to 20 of the over 120 applicants yearly. The program, typically completed in five years, requires an internship, extensive focus on research and two independent research projects including a master's thesis and doctoral dissertation. This is a full-time residential program, and part-time students are not accepted.
