Yale University's Department of Mathematics offers a Ph.D. in applied mathematics that offers students an opportunity to apply mathematical skill and research to a variety of fields. Areas of emphasis within the Yale program include statistical computing, discrete mathematics and applications, applied harmonic analysis (classical and modern), numerical analysis, probability theory, graph algorithms, partial differential equations, econometrics, application of math techniques to fluid mechanics and financial mathematics, among others. The Ph.D. program at Yale is typically four years in length and requires students to complete core courses in algorithms, probability, numerical computation and methods of applied analysis. All Ph.D. students accepted into the program receive a full tuition waiver, stipend and medical insurance for the first four years in the program.

The University of California at Berkeley (UCB) is one of the top-rated math graduate schools in the nation. According to U.S. News and World Report, UCB ranked number two among all graduate programs nationwide (tied with Harvard, Princeton and Stanford). The math department at UCB offers two Ph.D. degrees, one in math and one in applied mathematics. Students in the UCB program take two years of lower level courses in differential equations, calculus, multivariable calculus and linear algebra. The remainder of the program covers upper level courses in areas such as abstract and linear algebra, real analysis and complex analysis. Funding for students in the Ph.D. program at UCB is provided for five years covering tuition and providing students with an opportunity to teach or obtain fellowships to cover the cost of living.

Also offering the Ph.D. in applied mathematics, the University of Colorado at Denver (UCD) is a third option for students looking for an applied math program. UCD offers applied math graduate students the opportunity to specialize in several different fields of study such as modeling, computational sciences, discrete math, computational mathematics, statistics, computational biology, probability, operations research, engineering, economics and science. Teaching assistantships are available to entering students and provide students with a stipend plus a tuition waiver. A number of fellowships and research assistantships are also available.
