Math Education PhD Programs

Math education Ph.D. programs prepare students to become educators, curriculum specialists, supervisors and faculty members at secondary schools and institutes of higher education. These programs combine math and education instruction along with research that focuses on the different methods of teaching and learning math.

    • Students who pursue a Ph.D. in math education at the University of Delaware must complete core courses in education along with math education courses such as research and theory of mathematics learning, research and theory of mathematics teaching and research issues in mathematics education. Students are required to complete a portfolio that outlines their expertise in the education field.

    Portland State University

    • The Ph.D. in Math Education program at Portland State University requires students to complete 84 hours of coursework in math education research, upper division math such as linear algebra and abstract algebra and upper division subjects outside of math such as philosophy and computer science. Students will complete a research project and doctoral dissertation. Candidates are expected to be proficient in reading a second language. This can include a programming language. Students will spend some time in the urban school system to research math teaching and learning techniques.

    George Mason University

    • Students pursuing a Ph.D. in education at George Mason University can specialize in mathematics education leadership. Program requirements are completion of 85 hours for those who hold a baccalaureate degree and 55 hours for those who hold a master's degree. The program is designed to be completed in five to six years. Students take a series of classes that fall into three categories: general culture, research methods and professional specialization. Students are required to take on a second specialization and complete 12 credit hours within that subject area. An electronic portfolio that outlines the student's professional development must be completed along with a dissertation.
