The University of Virginia offers a Ph.D. program in adapted physical education. This program is designed to prepare students to become educational scholars who conduct extensive and original research in their area of specialty within adapted physical education. Students take courses within this program that include achievement-based curriculum in physical education, children with developmental disabilities, children with severe disabilities, and children with physical and sensory disabilities. Students also take classes in motor development, technology in physical education, consulting techniques, and families with special needs infants.

The University of New Mexico offers a Ph.D. program in physical education, sports and exercise science. This doctoral program consists of three concentration areas that include curriculum and instruction, exercise science and sports administration. In curriculum and instruction, students are prepared to enter the physical education career in teaching, curriculum development and supervision. The exercise science concentration prepares students to take the examination to become a certified exercise physiologists. In sports administration, students are prepared to become athletic directors and administrators.

Arizona State University offers a Ph.D. in physical education with a sub-discipline in the study of sport pedagogy. The study of sports pedagogy consists of three main areas: research on curriculum, research on teaching and research on teacher education. Students in this program study the processes of teaching and learning in a variety of aspects within physical activity settings including community and school settings and youth or collegiate sports programs. Students take courses that cover the topics of education, exercise and wellness, and kinesiology. Students also take classes in teaching team sports, adapted physical education methods, health methods, adapted and inclusive physical education, and building a professional portfolio in physical education.
