Portland State University

• Portland State University offers a Ph.D. (Doctor of Philosophy) program in mathematics education. This program prepares students to become educators who understand the learning and teaching involved in mathematics and who also possess the ability to research and practice professionally in the field. Students who complete this program may choose to become mathematics faculty members in universities, community colleges or four-year colleges and some may prefer to become mathematics curriculum specialists in secondary or middle school levels. Some graduates may even prefer to pursue mathematics education as specialists in private sectors. Students will take courses such as Excursions in Mathematics, Calculus for Management and Social Sciences Applied Differential Equations, and Group Theory and Applications.

• The University of Michigan has a mathematics education program that provides students with the opportunity to earn a Doctor of Philosophy degree and become creative scholars, teachers and leaders in mathematics education. Students will be able to work as expert practitioners, policy professionals or researchers upon successful completion of this program. Students who are enrolled in this Ph.D. program take courses that include Fundamental Issues In Educational Studies, Methods in Educational Research and Professional Development in Mathematics Education as well as Research in Mathematics Education, Mathematics Curriculum, The Study of Mathematics Thinking and Learning, and The Study of Mathematics Instruction.

• The University of Missouri offers a mathematics education program that prepares students for entry into leadership and higher education positions involving mathematics education. Students who successfully complete this program will obtain a Doctor of Philosophy degree in mathematic education. Students will cover topics in curriculum, learning theories, technology, research and assessment and will take courses that include Mathematics Curriculum, Assessment in Mathematics Education and Research in Mathematics Education.
