Infectious Disease Epidemiology PhD Programs

Epidemiology is the study of the presence and prevalence of illness in human populations, including infectious diseases. Since studying infectious diseases is inherent in such programs, one can get a doctorate specializing in some facet of infectious diseases from most schools that offer doctorates in epidemiology. Various schools throughout the U.S. provide doctoral degrees in this field; many are affiliated with well-respected universities.
  1. University of North Carolina

    • The University of North Carolina offers a doctorate in epidemiology. The program includes classes, preliminary exams and doctoral research, like most other doctoral programs. The degree generally takes 3 to 5 years to complete for students who already have master's or professional degrees such as a degree in medicine or veterinary medicine. The doctorate is meant to prepare students for work in teaching and research at private research institutions, state or federal agencies or universities.

    University of California Los Angeles

    • The University of California Los Angeles offers a doctorate in epidemiology with a goal of preparing students for community service, teaching and research. Students must initially take core curriculum classes to gain a foundation of the essential tools and critical-thinking skills used in epidemiology. Later courses deal with a range of health issues and quantitative techniques and may focus on a particular topic, such as tropical diseases. All students in professional and graduate degree programs at UCLA may obtain a Certificate in Global Health, which involves the study of infectious diseases, among other topics.

    University of Michigan

    • The University of Michigan offers a doctorate in epidemiology through the Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies that prepares students for careers in government, academia and other areas. New students have two parts to their programs that they must complete. First, in the pre-candidate stage, they must create a prospectus outlining the research they want to pursue and take a test. Next, in the candidate stage, students complete their research with guidance from a faculty committee. The degree usually takes 2 1/2 to 4 years to complete for students who already have master's degrees in public health, or other related degree.
