Creative Writing Colleges in Florida

Aspiring writers are attracted to Florida for its diverse range of creative writing colleges. "Poets & Writers" magazine included two writing programs in Florida in its Top 50 MFA Programs of 2010 -- the University of Florida and Florida State University. Students in Florida wishing to become professional writers have the option of taking undergraduate classes in creative writing, or pursing the finite MFA (Masters of Fine Arts) degree in creative writing. MFA graduates can go on to teach creative writing at the collegiate level, or they can publish literary works.

    • The University of Florida has one of the oldest creative writing programs in the nation. Established in 1948 by the novelist Andrew Lytle, the University of Florida writing program has grown to become a top-notch, respected program. "U.S. News & World Report" ranks the University of Florida's MFA program in the top twenty nationwide.

      The mission of this creative writing program is to cultivate good writers. They do not focus on a single concentration of writing. Students are welcome to write poetry or fiction.

      Graduates of the MFA program go on to work in the publishing industry. Others are editors at elite publications, including the "New Yorker," "Oxford American" and "New England Review."

    • Florida State University, located in Tallahassee, is considered one of the best creative writing programs in the country. "Atlantic Monthly" magazine ranked its MFA program in the top 10 best MFA programs in the United States. "Poets & Writers" magazine ranked the school in the top 40 of MFA programs.

      Faculty members at this prestigious creative writing college have won the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award. No other program in the United States has more honorees in the "Best American Poetry" series than Florida State University. Graduates have made the New York Times Bestseller List, and written for "Esquire," "Harper's," "Southern Review," "Atlantic Monthly" and numerous other publications.

    • Florida International University in Miami offers an MFA creative writing program for students who are interested in a range of concentrations. The 48 credit-hour programs ask students to enroll in writing workshops and classes on literature, form and theory, and write a thesis. Writing workshops range in topics, including the novel, short fiction, screenwriting, poetry, narrative structure and revision, and creative nonfiction.

      The emphasis of the creative writing program at Florida International University is on preparing and completing a book-length creative thesis. Most students complete the MFA program in three years, no longer than eight years at the maximum.

    University of Central Florida

    • The University of Central Florida has creative writing programs for undergraduates and graduate students. At the undergraduate level, students can learn the craft of writing poetry and prose, and they will receive a bachelor of arts in creative writing when they graduate. Creative writing is also offered as a minor. Students in the program will read fiction, poetry and non-fiction, as well as write their own work in these genres.

      At the graduate level, an MFA in creative writing is offered. Concentrations in the MFA program include fiction, poetry and creative non-fiction. The MFA program is small. Only about 35 full and part-time students are enrolled at one time.
