The Seventh-Day Adventist Church founded Andrews University in 1874 in Berrien Springs, a rural community 10 miles south of Benton Harbor, and since that time, the college has grown to an enrollment of more than 3,400 undergraduate and graduate students. The college's undergraduate degree in English writing allows students to specialize in creative writing. Students in the program also take courses in expository, linguistics, rhetoric and literature. The creative writing courses allow students to develop independent poetry, drama, stories and essays. The college holds regular events for students, such as lectures from visiting authors and poets. It also offers poetry and jazz nights for students to share their work. Every other year, English department undergraduate students have the opportunity to participate in a travel study trip to the Stratford Shakespeare Festival in Canada. Eligible students at Andres can receive federal and state financial aid, institutional scholarships and work-study placements.
