In-depth media research is an emphasized component of the school, where students are required to take classes on subjects such as studying recent trends in journalism and the influence media can have on society. Undergraduate journalism students are required to complete an internship before they can graduate. Alumni of the school have gone on to have careers at companies such as CNN, ESPN, National Geographic and The New York Times.

    Wayne State University Department of Communications

    • The school is recognized for its Journalism Institute for Media Diversity, which is a separate journalism program from the regular undergraduate journalism school and is open to high-achieving students who want to focus on race in the media. Students are required to maintain a GPA of 3.0 while attending the Institute. Scholarships are awarded to qualifying students accepted into the Institute. Students of ethnic, racial or other underrepresented groups are urged to apply. The regular journalism programs outside the Institute include concentrations in television, radio and print for undergraduate and graduate students. Alumni have gone on to work at the Los Angeles Times, Detroit Free Press and the Wall Street Journal.

    Central Michigan University Department of Journalism

    • With an accomplished faculty, the undergraduate journalism school offers several concentrations, including photojournalism and news editorial. A wide range of skills are taught in classes, including visual communication, analyzing trends and multimedia productions. Students can begin working for the campus newspaper, Central Michigan Life, as early as their freshman year. The school also provides students with an opportunity to intern at international publications, such as China Daily.
