The Jesuit Order of the Roman Catholic Church established Marquette University in Milwaukee in 1881. Home to more than 11,000 undergraduate and graduate students, the university received the 84th-place ranking among all universities in the United States in 2010 from "U.S. News and World Report." The college's Diedrich College of Communication offers a baccalaureate degree in journalism. Students have the option to specialize in newspaper, magazine and publications, visual communications and broadcast journalism. All students complete an internship prior to graduation with past placements including positions with "Newsday," The Associated Press, the "Chicago Tribune" and the "Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel." The college also offers a master's degree in communications with a specialization in journalism. Approximately 90 percent of freshmen and 86 percent of continuing students receive financial aid while studying at Marquette, according to the "2009 Barron's Profiles of American Colleges."

Affiliated with the Roman Catholic order of the School Sisters of Notre Dame, Mount Mary College is a private, four-year college for women located in Milwaukee. The school has more than 1,800 undergraduate and graduate students. The college offers a bachelor's degree in professional writing with a minor in journalism for would-be journalists. Courses required for the program include reporting, feature writing, editing and publishing, promotional writing, technical writing and American and world literature. An internship is mandatory for all students with employers like Milwaukee-area television stations and newspapers. Around 75 percent of all students that attend Mount Mary College receive need-based financial aid, explains the "2009 Barron's Profiles of American Colleges."

Founded in 1957, the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee is a public institution with more than 29,200 undergraduate and graduate students on its 93-acre campus. For would-be journalists or individuals in the field of journalism who wish to gain advanced education, the university offers a master of art and doctorate degree in media, cinema and digital studies. Students in both programs design their own curriculum and can choose to study print media, multimedia writing or television. A culminating thesis, project or formal internship is required for both graduate programs. A limited number of teaching assistantships and fellowships are available to help students manage the cost of attending the university. Wisconsin residents receive discounted tuition rates.
