The Tennessee Department of Labor & Workforce Development predicts that the demand for police detectives and corrections officers in the Knoxville, Tenn., area will increase by 21 to 27 percent from 2006 to 2016. The four-year program features classes in social change, statistics, sociological theory and research, criminology, juvenile justice and criminal policy, race and ethnicity, gender and crime, society and law, white-collar crime and social justice. Also offered are master's and doctoral degrees in criminology. The college offers a two-year Associate of Science degree in criminal justice and a four-year Bachelor of Science degree in criminal justice. The latter program requires classes in law enforcement operations, substance abuse, court procedures, corrections, investigations, criminal and constitutional law, ethics, diversity issues in criminal justice, technical writing, media and crime, forensic science and communications. Among the financial aid programs available for South College students are federal and state loans and grants, private loans and institutional scholarships.
