Fountainhead College of Technology is one of the three approved Centers of Academic Excellence through the National Security Agency and Department of Homeland Security in the state of Tennessee. These programs help to reduce security issues within the national data infrastructure through improved education and research. Accredited through the National Accreditation Commission of Career Schools and Colleges, they offer associate's or bachelor's degree in computer programming that will result in the required skills and training needed to pursue a career in game design. Their Fast Track Associate's Degree program allows students to graduate within 16 months of enrollment or within 32 months for a bachelor's degree by offering mainly degree-related classes during the course of the program.
Financial aid and scholarships are available to some students. High school diploma or equivalency is required. College transcripts are needed for prior courses taken. The Software Applications Development program on the Knoxville campus of ITT Tech is a 180 credit-hour bachelor degree program resulting in a Bachelor of Applied Science degree upon completion. Specific classes include Application Design, Data Structures with Java, Programming in C+++ and C#, Database Design and Implementation, .NET Framework Programming, Software Engineering, Application Security and more. Students will develop foundational skills in a variety of programming languages and on various programming platforms, in addition to acquiring knowledge and understanding of software engineering methods, theories and programming industry standards.

The Associate of Applied Science Degree in Computer Science and Information Technology (CSIT) at Pellissippi State Technical Community College provides a student the education necessary to pursue a career in game design. Their Programming Concentration offers classes in several programming languages across a number of platforms resulting in a two-year degree.
In addition to its Associate of Applied Science Degree which provides graduates with a broad range of computer programming skills and knowledge, Pellissippi State offers a specialized certificate program in Game and Simulation Design that correlates with the CSIT degree and provides students specific opportunities for learning to design games. Students will use computer software to design products for commercial gaming consoles, online play and consumer use. Students will learn to develop, prototype and test commercial-level products through both team and individual assignments. A minimum grade-point average (GPA) of 2.0 is required to receive the certificate upon completion of the course.

The University of Tennessee's Department of Computer Science has merged with their Electrical Engineering department to provide undergraduate and graduate programs in computer science and computer engineering. These programs provide students the required education and skills needed to design, program and create video games as well as other software applications with classes offered in Data Structure and Design, Computer Organization, Scripts and Utilities, Fundamental Algorithims and more.
