The Academy of Art University, in San Francisco, offers an associate's degree in fashion with an emphasis in menswear. The degree is completed in two years, with 12 credits earned in the first semester and 18 credits in each of the other three semesters. Required courses cover the fashion business, the history of fashion, fashion illustration, menswear fashion design and menswear construction. Students can start the program at the beginning of any semester, because the college offers rolling enrollment.
In Chicago, students can choose Columbia College for a degree in fashion design that covers menswear fashions. A bachelor's degree in fashion design requires a student to complete 72 credits with a grade of C or higher. Students begin by taking core classes in fashion and design, covering the history of art, drawing, and 2-D and 3-D design. Required courses cover garment construction, pattern making and the fundamentals of textiles. Students must take at least two electives. Those wishing to focus on menswear fashions should take the menswear design class.
Students attending Parsons The New School for Design can obtain a bachelor's degree in fashion design. To be accepted the school, students must send in an application with the application fee and high school transcripts. All students must also complete the Parsons Challenge -- a six-part artistic exercise -- and submit a portfolio of their work. Possible courses to complete the degree include fashion design, fashion drawing, menswear tailoring and textiles. Students can also participate in special short-term projects made available through the college.
Located in New York City, the Fashion Institute of Technology offers students a degree in menswear design. This is the only degree program in the country that focuses solely on menswear design. Students complete courses in the basics of menswear design as well as computer-aided design, tailoring and the fundamentals of textiles. Internships are offered to students with companies such as Nautica, Tommy Hilfiger and Macy's. Study-abroad opportunities in Milan and Paris are also available.
