The Indiana University National Sports Journalism Center provides one of the most comprehensive sports journalism educations that a student can receive in America. According to the Center, its priority is to provide the highest quality of education to both undergraduate and graduate students. Courses help students learn about sports journalism from a print, online, broadcasting and public relations perspective, giving students the option for a well-rounded education that can serve sports journalism's many facets. The Center also helps students find important internships in sports journalism, ranging from newspaper and magazine writing to broadcast. Students have interned with ESPN, "The Los Angeles Times" and The Associated Press, among others.

The School of Journalism and Broadcasting at Oklahoma State University offers a sports media degree, which is one of the few undergraduate sports journalism degrees in the country. Because Oklahoma State University is a major sports school, sports media students have first-hand access to sports events. Students are able to major in sports media with a concentration in one of the following: sports broadcasting, sports journalism or sports public relations and promotion. The sports journalism program is mainly rooted in print and Web media. Students receive hands-on training at university sports events, many of which are filmed by ESPN.

The Boston University Sports Institute offers a masters-level program in sports journalism. Sports journalism students focus on practical writing, where they learn to cover major games; write sports features, columns and sports figure profiles; and write distinctive sports copy. The course also helps students understand the industry, with a focus on freelance writing. Students may also opt to take part in multimedia and broadcast sports programs.

The John Curley Center for Sports Journalism at Penn State designs its curriculum around trends in sports journalism, allowing students to learn the most up-to-date reporting techniques. Students learn how to write while learning about sports in general. They also take courses in public policy and media and society. Public policy courses are taken in conjunction with the Penn State Dickinson School of Law. The program helps students attain internships and run the student newspaper's sports section and radio station.
