The George Washington University Medical Center offers a bachelor's degree program and a certificate program in sonography. The bachelor 's degree program teaches all areas of sonography practice---general, vascular and cardiac--but students can choose two of the areas for clinical practice and clinical rotations. Candidates for the program must have 60 credit-hours of approved study from an accredited school. The bachelor program lasts for six semesters and is a full-time program. The certificate program lasts for four semesters--five for a candidate seeking a dual certificate--and consists of full-time studies. Rush University Medical Center offers an undergraduate degree program that focuses on vascular ultrasound technology. The program is full-time and lasts for 21 months. The first nine months of the program consists of classroom, laboratory and observation of patient examinations. Prerequisites include possessing a minimum of 60 credit-hours from an accredited institution, a minimum GPA of 2.75, plus three recommendations, two from previous instructors and one from an employer. Course topics include vascular anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology, vascular terminology, arterial physiologic procedures and transcranial Doppler. Rush University is named after Benjamin Rush, a Pennsylvania physician who signed the Declaration of Independence.
