Mercy College of Health Sciences offers an accredited certificate program in medical assisting. The three-semester program offers classroom instruction, practice in lab skills and clinical experience in radiography. Toward the end of the program, students have an opportunity to complete a clinical practicum within Mercy Clinics as well as with other health care providers in central Iowa. Once students have completed the certificate program, they have the option to continue toward the two-semester associate's degree in medical assisting. Mercy College accepts students into the program each fall semester. The admission process is competitive, so submitting an application early is advised. Financial aid and scholarships are available for students currently enrolled in the program.

Capital Community College offers two associate's degrees in medical assisting. The first accredited degree is strictly a medical assistant program that focuses on clinical and laboratory courses. The second accredited program includes medical insurance courses and is designed for students who would like to pursue a clerical as well as a clinical career in medical assisting. Students would not only learn basic medical assisting skills, but they also would focus on areas of billing, coding and medical office management. Both degree programs require students to complete an externship through a local doctor's office. Prerequisites for the program include a high school diploma or GED equivalent and certifications in CPR and first aid from the American Red Cross.

Manchester Community College offers students the option of taking either a certificate in medical assisting, which focuses on medical courses only, or the associate's degree, which includes advanced training in clinical procedures and the choice of liberal arts electives. Prerequisites for the program require a high school diploma or GED equivalent and an interview with a member of the faulty to determine if the student is a candidate for the program. Upon graduation of the accredited programs, students are eligible to sit for certification as well as seek employment in a doctor's office.

Everest College offers an accredited diploma program in medical assisting with training in patient care, cardiopulmonary procedures, laboratory procedures and bookkeeping. Upon completion of the program, students are required to participate in a 160-hour externship. The college offers financial aid assistance as well as job placement after graduation.
