Several paths are available for someone who wants to become a certified medical assistant. A degree for medical assisting provides an opportunity for higher pay. Both programs require six hours in a clinical externship before the student takes the certified medical assistant exam.

    • Anthem College in Brookfield, Wisconsin, offers an associate's and a diploma program. The degree program is 56 weeks long and requires 60 credit hours. For a medical assistant diploma, a student must complete 28 weeks of class and 30 credit hours. The externship for each program is 5.5 credit hours and must be completed before taking the certified medical assistant exam.

Students enter a local clinical externship during the last four weeks of the final semester.

    Concordia University

    • Concordia University offers a medical assisting certificate program. Students taking daytime class can complete the certificate in nine months. If a student needs to attend during the evening, the medical assisting program takes 13 months. This program requires 36 credits and a five-week externship. The student works full-time in a medical office during the externship.
