While Kenyon College does not offer a Creative Writing major to undergraduate students, it does provide a Creative Writing Emphasis for those English majors who are interested. Given its long history in honing the skills of brilliant poets and fiction writers (consider the reputation of the Kenyon Review--one of the most highly esteemed literary journals in the U.S.), even only an emphasis in creative writing will grant the student access to some of the top creative writing courses offered. The Creative Writing program is not open to first-year students and admission is considered only after submission of a writing sample.

The Creative Writing Program at Oberlin College is one of the few majors in Creative Writing offered by a U.S. institution at the undergraduate level. The program does still require twelve credit hours' study of literature in addition to writing courses. Introductory creative writing courses are offered to first-year students. Those interested in the Program must apply for admission.

Like Kenyon College, the University of Iowa offers an emphasis in creative writing to the English major: the Undergraduate Creative Writing Track. Only students of junior or senior standing are allowed to apply to the program after having completed the prerequisites listed in the English major. Once accepted, creative writing students enjoy small group seminars to discuss and critique original work.
