The University of Iowa at Iowa City was the first school in the United States to offer creative writing as a degree program, referred to as the Writer's Workshop. It was also named the Best Midwestern College by the Princeton Review in 2010. The school offers a Bachelor of English Literature with a concentration in creative writing, along with a Master of Fine Arts, with a concentration in creative writing.
The University of Virginia in Charlottesville was listed among the top 25 schools in America in the U.S. News and World Report in 2010. The schools allows English majors to pursue a track in poetry. It also offers a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing. Several of the professors have received awards for their published work. These works include novels, short fiction, poetry and essays.
The University of Texas offers a Master of Fine Arts program in Creative Writing. Students can choose to specialize in poetry or fiction. All students in these programs receive full funding from teaching assistant positions, fellowships and grants. These students also have the opportunity to learn the editorial side of the writing process by working for the Bat City Review, a literary journal managed by graduate students.
New York University's creative writing program provides both bachelor's and master's degree programs, as well as a minor in creative writing. The courses start with the fundamentals and move into specific techniques and genres. The master's program provides seminars with master writers, a literary outreach program and the opportunity to participate in a literary journal.
