Loyola University in Chicago is a private, Catholic university with four campuses. The University of Tennessee (UT) in Knoxville is a public research institute of higher learning with more than 300 degree programs. The UT Health Science Center (UTHSC) is composed of six colleges, including the College of Pharmacy with the Department of Clinical Pharmacy and the Department of Pharmaceutical Science. The college offers a dual PharmD/PhD program (doctor of pharmacy/doctor of philosophy) with three concentration options in Medicinal Chemistry, Health Science Administration or Pharmaceutics. The program begins in the summer, with one or two lab experiences, and each summer following the first and second years of the program includes research activity. Students also receive financial support, including a summer stipend.

Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, is a research university with an emphasis in liberal arts studies. Emory has been ranked as one of the top 20 universities in the nation by U.S. News and World Report, as of 2010. The Goizueta Business School within the university was placed as the eleventh best business school in the nation by Financial Times in 2010. The PhD program includes a summer, fall and spring curriculum consisting of social sciences and quantitative methods coursework, seminars and summer research projects. Concentration options are offered in accounting, organization and management, finance, information systems and marketing. The program also includes the Teaching Assistant Training and Teaching Opportunity (TATTO) Program for students to gain experience in classroom instruction.
