Lesley University offers a Ph.D. program in Expressive Therapies. It is a low residency doctoral program that requires only three-week summer intensive residencies three times throughout. The 45 credit curriculum utilizes a variety of learning technologies, including email and videoconferencing, to allow doctoral candidates to communicate with supervisors and other faculty. The program involves several research and independent study courses to allow doctoral candidates to pursue topics that are specific to their objectives within the program. There are multiple residency options available for completing the Ph.D. in Literature and Criticism at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Doctoral candidates can elect to complete one full semester in part-time studies in residency as well as one summer. Candidates may alternatively elect to assume a 75 percent residency course load during each summer and a part time residency during one academic year. Finally, students may choose to complete a full time residency during two summers of the program. Throughout the program, students will complete a candidacy examination, become proficient in a second language, conduct research and write a dissertation. Applicants must possess a master's degree in a related field and, if accepted into the program, must maintain a minimum 3.5 grade point average to remain in good standing with the University.

The Ph.D. in Education with a concentration in Sustainability Education offered at Prescott College requires a residency commitment of 35 days throughout the program. Doctoral candidates will require a minimum of four years and a maximum of seven years to complete the program's requirements, although students should attend conference and seminar residencies at least once per academic year for a number of days at a time.
