How to Qualify for PhD Program

Earning acceptance to a Ph.D., or doctoral program, can be the fulfillment of a lifelong dream, but you need to plan well in advance to make it happen. As you research doctoral programs in your field of choice, you will find that they are straightforward about their admissions requirements. Choose doctoral programs that have requirements you can reasonably expect to achieve, and offer specialties that interest you. If your credentials meet program requirements, you have a good chance being offered admission to your first choice schools.

      Research colleges and universities that offer doctoral programs in your field of interest. Get to know their reputation and national ranking using a resource such as U.S. News & World Report, Best Graduate Schools.

      Visit websites of prospective university graduate departments. Read the requirements for admission for each doctoral programs. Make checklists to find out where you stand with regard to each prospective doctoral program. Begin your research a year or two before you plan to apply to your programs of choice.

      Write out a list of required classes for your top doctoral program choices. Make a timetable to complete the required coursework. Admission to doctoral programs is competitive, and in most cases you will need a high grade point average to qualify. Schedule your classes so that you have enough time to do your best work and get good grades.

      Register to take the Graduate Record Exam, if it's required, in the summer of the year when you plan to submit your your applications. Study for the GRE at least two months before you take it. If your GRE score does not qualify you for admission to your first choice doctoral programs, you can take the exam again, or modify your search to find programs that will accept the lower score.

      Ask professors who know your work well if they will write you a letter of recommendation. Most doctoral program application deadlines are in December or January. Approach professors at least two months before you plan to submit your application to give them ample time to write your letter.

      Write a statement of purpose that clearly states your reasons for seeking a doctorate. Your statement should include your research plans, career goals, and explain how each school can help you achieve them.

      Submit your completed application and supporting materials by the program priority application date so that you can receive early consideration from the admissions committee.
