Residency Ph.D. Programs

Joint Residency and Ph.D. programs allow doctors to continue their medical education while also furthering their understanding of science and medical research.     • The UT Health Science Center at San Antonio offers a combined M.D. residency and Ph.D. program in the field of radiological sciences. Residents in the radiology, psychiatry or radiation oncology departments are permitted to complete course work for a doctorate of radiation biology, with a specially designed track in Human Imaging. The UT Health Science Center hosts the second-biggest radiological sciences graduate degree in the country, which includes the bioprosthetic surface laboratory research center, run by the inventor of the intravascular stent.

    UCLA

    • The UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine, the only medical institution in the world named after a record company executive, offers a combined residency and Ph.D. program through Specialty Training and Advanced Research (STAR). STAR admits both academic fellows and medical residents. Ph.D. candidates may choose a field in the life sciences or a department from the school of engineering or California Institute of Technology. For those who wish to continue research after the residency and Ph.D. are completed, the STAR program has a two- or three-year post-doctoral research-training programs.

    Van Andel Institute

    • Michigan's Van Andel Institute graduate school has partnered with the Grand Rapids Medical Education and Research Center to create a joint medical residency and Ph.D. program. The aim of the program is to provide selective students with the resources to earn a Ph.D. in molecular or cellular biology while working toward licensure and board approval in internal medicine. Programs of study and residency are designed as per the previous research experience and medical interests of each student. Stipends and benefits are extended to participants.
