The University of Pennsylvania School of medicine was founded in 1765 as the nation's first medical school. U.S. News & World Report ranks the school of medicine as one of the top 10 in the nation. The pathology program at University of Pennsylvania consists of 3 or 4 years of training in different fields of pathology. Students can choose between a 4-year anatomic and clinical pathology program or a 3-year anatomic program. The university provides a total of eight residency positions, two 1-year surgical pathology fellowship positions and one soft tissue/bone pathology fellowship. Students who have successfully completed medical school are eligible to apply to the program.

The department of pathology at Stanford University is a research-based institution that admits medical students, residents, graduate students, postdoctoral and clinical fellows in the field of pathology. Residents can choose to specialize in either anatomic pathology or clinical pathology, and such subfields as hematopathology and neuropathology. In order to specialize in surgical pathology, residents must enroll in a 5-year program. The pathology department offers 3-year research funding to candidates who are interested in pursuing an investigative career. Housing assistance is also available to incoming residents.
