The University of Akron has a Bachelor of Arts in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology. This program trains students in audiology, which is the study of hearing and balance problems, and speech-language pathology. The focus of the training is on assessment, treatment and prevention. Students must have a B or better in lower level classes, and a 3.2 overall grade point average in order to take observation and clinical techniques. This course has 25 hours of clinical study that is supervised and is required to enter graduate work. Completion of general courses, a second year foreign language or 14 hours of sign language, 21 elective credits and 42 hours of core speech/audiology classes are required for graduation from this program. The University of South Alabama has a Master's program in Speech-Language Pathology and a Doctorate in Audiology. The Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association is the accrediting body for these programs. Speech Pathology candidates meeting required criteria will complete a clinical fellowship and Audiology Doctorate candidates who complete required courses will both be eligible for certification and state licensure. Candidates must also meet core performance skills in areas such as problem solving, communication, judgment, demeanor, sensory and motor to successfully complete these programs. The University of Southern Mississippi has a Bachelor's program in Speech-Language Pathology/Audiology. This school's degree program satisfies the requirements for continued graduate study into a Master's/Doctorate program. Degree requirements are 124 total hours with 50 percent being obtained from a senior, 4-year college. In addition, 45 hours have to be in courses numbered 300 or above and 25 percent of all coursework must be taken at the University of Southern Mississippi. Candidates receive 52 hours of course work dedicated to speech and audiology along with general courses, foreign language, electives and sign language.
