Columbia University, an Ivy League school in New York City, offers the Kyoto Summer Program in Advanced and Classical Japanese. Students of the program study in the ancient city of Kyoto, studying the local language and participating in guest lectures and cultural excursions to sites of historic importance. Applicants must be university students with a minimum 3.0 GPA who have studied Japanese for three years. The program runs from June to mid-July and costs $3,900, not including flights to Japan and living expenses. Scholarships are available to some students.

The Yamasa Institute, a non-profit language school and research center in Japan, offers various summer study options. The University Japanese Program is an intensive language study course which can be taken for seven or nine weeks and costs approximately $5,000. The course welcomes both beginners and intermediates, helping students improve their reading and listening comprehension, speaking skills and writing abilities. Thirty sessions are conducted weekly with a maximum of eight participants per class. Students also participate in field trips and cultural activities to improve their understanding of Japanese society.

Waseda University in Japan and Portland State University in Oregon partner to offer an intensive language summer program. The program accepts up to 60 students a year, with participants coming from all over the U.S. and the world to study in Japan for six weeks. Students earn Portland State credits for their work and those with both beginner and advanced language abilities are welcome to apply. Tuition for the course is $5,450, including some room and board expenses, but not airfare. Applicants must be attending a four year university or college full time and have a minimum 3.0 GPA.
