Science Research Summer Programs

For academically gifted students, many science research summer programs are available with subjects ranging from astronomy to medical research. Most programs offer hands-on experience and other benefits such as college credit and advanced knowledge. Through some programs, the students may receive their first professional credit for research in a published journal. Many of the programs also offer excellent financial aid to those who need it.
  1. The Summer Science Program

    • The Summer Science Program (SSP) is a six-week residential program for gifted high school students. SSP is offered at two locations, New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology (NMIMT) in Soccorro, New Mexico, and Westmont College in Santa Barbara, California.

According to the SSP website, daily activities include college-level astronomy, physics, calculus, and programming classes during the day. At night, teams of three observe a near-Earth asteroid through a telescope and write software designed to predict the orbit of the asteroid. In addition to the daily activities, there are occasional guest speakers and field trips.

The maximum cost for the program as of 2010 is $3,850, which covers everything except the cost of transport. Generous financial aid, including the cost of airfare, is available for those who qualify, and there is no application fee.

According to their website, the program may focus on fields ranging from category theory to cancer research. Students use leading laboratories in the Boston area for their research and are invited by corporate- and government-sponsored research teams to join them in current research. Some students have received credit in scientific journals for their participation in research projects, and some have used their RSI projects in science competitions and won.

Tuition and room and board are free. The only costs not covered are the costs of transportion between the students' homes and MIT.
