The Summer Science Program (SSP) is a six-week residential program for gifted high school students. SSP is offered at two locations, New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology (NMIMT) in Soccorro, New Mexico, and Westmont College in Santa Barbara, California.
According to the SSP website, daily activities include college-level astronomy, physics, calculus, and programming classes during the day. At night, teams of three observe a near-Earth asteroid through a telescope and write software designed to predict the orbit of the asteroid. In addition to the daily activities, there are occasional guest speakers and field trips.
The maximum cost for the program as of 2010 is $3,850, which covers everything except the cost of transport. Generous financial aid, including the cost of airfare, is available for those who qualify, and there is no application fee.
