Humanities Doctoral Programs

Graduate students in humanities find a limited number of PhD programs devoted to classical literature and ideas. The pursuit of a PhD in humanities can be beneficial to a student's career if they take advantage of departmental resources. Humanities doctoral programs provide research, teaching and publishing opportunities to help their students explore new ideas. These experiences also help PhD candidates build strong resumes for jobs as university professors, nonprofit administrators and publishers.
  1. Salve Regina University

    • Salve Regina University in Newport, Rhode Island offers a 78-credit PhD program in humanities. This PhD program features four areas of concentration including global ethics and social transformation. Every doctoral candidate must complete 13 core courses covering topics such as the history of technology and political philosophy. The remaining credits are completed through research seminars, qualifying exams and dissertation work.

      The Independent Research Fellows Cohort allows exceptional PhD candidates to finish 13 core courses and dissertation proposals in one year. Humanities students spend time at McKillup Library at Salve Regina University locating archival materials, journals and books for their dissertations.

    University of Louisville

    • The Division of Humanities at the University of Louisville features a 48-credit doctoral program in humanities. PhD students in humanities choose concentrations in aesthetics and studies in culture before pursuing their dissertations. Doctoral seminars cover topics including hermeneutics, cultural metaphors and fairy tales.

      The Division of Humanities allows PhD students to apply for graduate teaching assistantships that provide stipends in exchange for teaching undergraduate courses. The Commonwealth Center for the Humanities and Society at the University of Louisville hosts events, lectures and movies of interest to doctoral students.

    University of Texas-Dallas

    • The University of Texas-Dallas runs a 42-credit PhD in Humanities Program through its School of Arts and Humanities. Every PhD student must demonstrate literacy in a language other than English before starting the humanities curriculum. Doctoral students work with their faculty advisers to choose concentrations such as the history of ideas and studies in literature.

      The School of Arts and Humanities runs the Armstrong Fellowship Program, which accepts applications from exceptional doctoral candidates each year. The Center for Values in Medicine, Science and Technology hosts seminars, conferences and lectures that attract PhD candidates.
