The University of Oregon's Environmental Science graduate program offers students all the available lushness and diversity of the American Northwest as a territory in which to develop as an environmental scientist. The aim of the program is to sculpt scientists with the ability to analyze and understand environmental systems, predict environmental change, and participate in the management of the environment. Students are expected to develop research for a dissertation. Graduates earning PhDs will be able to find employment with governmental agencies or consulting firms.

Arkansas State's (ASU) Graduate Program in Environmental Sciences offers a problem solving approach to local and global environmental challenges. Courses include standard ES fair such as Molecular Biology and Soil Science as well as integrating environmental courses with Political Science and Hydrology. Applicants to the program must submit materials under one of two emphasis tracts: Science, or Policy and Economics. A minimum undergraduate or master's GPA of 3.0 and a combined score or 1200 on the GRE is preferred.

The doctorate of Environmental Science at Indiana University focuses on improving society's understanding of environmental issues while equipping students to better manage, mitigate, and avoid such problems in coming generations. An advisory committee of at least four professors, two of whom are from the School of Public and Environmental Affairs, will be assigned to each PhD candidate, to mentor and critique the student's work.
