Health care professionals may take a course leading to IV therapy certification. Upon course completion, students can describe the anatomy and structures of veins and vein locations in upper extremities. They can calculate the proper dosage for and volume for prescribed IV medication and be aware of signs of adverse reactions and the need for nursing intervention for any complications. Students must demonstrate correct catheter placement and know items related to IV support and equipment along with specific IV therapy elements. The 30-hour course is offered every other month and consists of 24 hours of lecture and six hours of labs.
