According to the "U.S. College Search" website, there are over 580 colleges and universities in the U.S. offering Islamic studies programs as of February 2011. Some of the programs listed on the site are full degrees, with courses including a study of the Qur'an, the history of the religion, a look at different Islamic ethnic groups and interfaith dialogues. The degree is recommended for students who wish to become a multinational business leader, political policy maker or religious leader.
Islamic studies specialist Carl W. Ernst provides a list of universities and colleges that offer master's programs in Islamic studies. Though his list is not meant to be exhaustive, it gives a good overview of options available in both the religion departments of secular universities and colleges and the programs available through divinity schools. The University of Georgia, Claremont Graduate University, Miami University Ohio and Washington University offer MAs in Islamic studies. Ernst also lists a few colleges and universities that offer MAs in Middle Eastern studies, with particular focus on Islamic studies.
Ernst continues his list of Islamic studies programs by outlining a few PhD programs at universities in North America. The bulk of the programs are offered at colleges in the U.S., but a couple are at Canadian universities like McGill in Montreal and the University of Toronto. The list of PhD programs is full of helpful information for making an informed decision about which school to attend. Ernst's list is specific to religious studies PhDs and excludes Islamic studies PhDs as part of Near or Middle Eastern studies, which is another option for PhD study.
The Virginia Commonwealth University republishes a list of Islamic studies programs from the University of Michigan. The list isn't exhaustive but each college is listed with tuition fee and contact information. Additionally, the VCU list includes 21 programs offered at colleges around the Middle East, including schools in Egypt, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Syria and Yemen.
