Community College Certificate Programs

Whether you're interested in beefing up your resume, trying out a new field or skill, trying a new career path before committing to an associate's or bachelor's program or if you just want to learn something new, taking a community college certificate course may be a good match. Community colleges offer short-term certificate programs, usually around a year in length, in a large variety of professional fields. Below are some examples; check with your local community colleges for their offerings.
  1. Nash Community College

    • Students interested in the beauty industry may jump-start their careers with Nash Community College's one-year cosmetology certificate program. The program consists of four courses in cosmetology concepts and four courses in salon work, covering topics in nail, hair and skin services. All students must also take applied communications and interpersonal psychology. Graduates may sit for the State Board of Cosmetic Arts exam and upon passing, receive a cosmetology license.

      Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED and submit SAT or ACT scores.

    West Virginia University at Parkersburg

    • Earn a certificate in welding in one year from West Virginia University at Parkersburg. Topics include basic oxyacetylene welding, shop math, metallurgy, welding blueprint reading and steel fabrication. The program combines classroom learning with hands-on welding experience. Upon completion of the program, students take the West Virginia State Certification exam in welding. Students may also apply program coursework to an associate's degree in welding technology.

      Admissions candidates must have a high school diploma or GED and submit ACT or SAT scores and an immunization record of measles and rubella shots.

    Capital Community College

    • Capital Community College offers a one-year certificate program for students interested in becoming library technical assistants. Classes include introduction to library public services, introduction to cataloging and technical services, computers in libraries, introduction to software applicants, composition and introduction to visual communications. Capital Community College will arrange an internship for students who want to get real-world experience.

      Students interested in the certificate must have a high school diploma or GED and proof of measles and rubella immunizations. All new students will take a placement test and meet with a faculty adviser.
