Dartmouth Summer Programs

During the summer months, Dartmouth University is full of middle and high school students seeking to continue their education in fields such as debate, health care, languages and robotics. Most programs accept students for summer programs in the spring. Additional programs and courses are available to Dartmouth undergraduate students. Program length varies according to topic: for instance, Dartmouth's debate programs are about a month long.
  1. Forensic Union Debate Workshop

    • The Dartmouth Debate Workshop is a summer program for students going into their sophomore and junior years of high school. The program is for less-experienced policy debaters, although students who debate other formats have been accepted to this program for more exposure to policy debating. The teaching staff on hand for this program is comprised of successful debaters and coaches who are also Dartmouth instructors. This program has no application fee and the deadline is usually in the beginning of May as of summer 2010. Applications can be sent by mail or in email format.

    Health Careers Institute

    • The Health Careers Institute at Darmouth provides incoming high school sophomores, juniors and seniors with the opportunities to explore careers in the healthcare field. The program is for students interested in wanting to learn more about clinical and non-clinical health careers. They are formatted to help the students narrow their focus and pursue a certain career. Learning activities include classroom instruction, hands-on experiences at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center and other medical settings, team projects, time with current health professionals, and work with simulated patients. A typical day includes mornings spent at the Dartmouth campus working on classroom activities and work on an ongoing health care field related project. Afternoons are spent in a hospital or healthcare setting where students can interact with healt care professionals and observe simulated operating and emergency room situations. Applications are due around April and July depending on what program you select.

    Summer Robotics Camp

    • The Dartmouth Summer Robotics Camp is for middle to high school age students through Dartmouth's Department of Computer Science. No prior experience in robotics is necessary and the camp is free to local students. Enrollment is determined via lottery. There are four camps based on grade level and all four focus on building and learning to control robots, including navigating a robot through a maze and using a robot arm to draw or paint pictures. Projects have including manipulating robots or robot arms to fold and grasp cloths, tie knots, rigid body manipulation and human marionettes. Applications are accepted no later than the end of May as of 2010.
