Pathology Summer Programs

The field of pathology focuses on three areas: diagnosis, teaching and investigation. Pathology appeals to those who enjoy studying disease-related problems. It is a blend of traditional disciplines, such as biochemistry, pharmacology and microbiology. Students interested in pathology should consider attending a summer program that offers laboratory research and career exploration. Many colleges have research opportunities for aspiring pathologists.
  1. Program for Research Experience in Pathology

    • University of Alabama at Birmingham offers a summer program in which college graduates and undergraduates study biomedical sciences through molecular pathology. Students use the tools of biochemistry, cell biology and molecular biology to probe into the processes that underlie human diseases. Students spend about 10 weeks during the summer conducting scientific research in the laboratories at the University of Alabama Medical Center. They investigate diverse areas, including immunobiology, carcinogenesis and metabolic disorders. Students attend a weekly conference series with other students and faculty in the program to learn scientific principles of cellular pathology. Prospective applicants are evaluated based on courses taken, grades and letters of recommendation. Successful applicants receive a stipend in addition to free housing.

    Undrgraduate Summer Research Internship Program

    • Purdue University's School of Agriculture offers undergraduate students eight-week internships in plant pathology. Undergraduates gain experience in the field by conducting research on projects with professors. An additional series informs students about graduate education, laboratory safety and career opportunities. Students receive financial assistance through a stipend, free housing and covered transportation. Prospective interns must be a United States resident and maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.0. Students must have finished their sophomore ear, or have completed two years of college-level courses in a life sciences major. Projects include, but are not limited to, vegetable genetics and weed science.

    Summer Symbiosis Program

    • The University of Wisconsin's Integrated Biological Sciences Summer Research Program provides students interested in plant pathology with an applied research experience. Undergraduates work in laboratories focused on plant, environmental and ecological research. Participates partake in independent research, aided by a postdoctoral mentor, professor or graduate student. Students have the opportunity to gain scientific knowledge and collaborate with a lab group during the 10 weeks. The program offers a career-oriented program to help students decide if a career in pathology is suitable for them. Students have a chance to interact with interns from other biological programs through leisure activities, too.
