Director License Requirements for Child Care in California

Child care directors in California receive certification from the California Department of Social Services. The state licensing board requires a director certificate for anyone wishing to work as an administrator in a child care center. Family child cares are not required to have a certified director. The requirements for a director certificate vary, based on the education and experience that the applicant has. Applicants with several years of experience working in a child care setting need less education and vice versa.
  1. Education

    • As of 2010, education requirements vary, depending on experience, from a high school diploma and 15 semester units in early childhood education course work, to an associates degree in Child Development, to a bachelors degree and a Child Development Site Supervisor or a Child Development Program Director permit.

    Experience

    • Some experience working in a day care setting is preferred, although not required, depending on education background. Applicants with a high school diploma and 15 semester units of early childhood coursework need at least four years' experience. Those with an associates degree in Child Development need only two years' experience, while those with a bachelors degree need no experience.

    Health Regulations

    • All day care workers, including directors, must complete a physical and a tuberculosis test prior to employment, verifying that they are free of disease and capable of performing the job.

    Additional Training

    • Directors are required to take an additional 15 hours of training prior to employment that includes CPR, first aid and universal precautions training. Additionally, annual ongoing training is required.
