State Requirements for CPA License

A Certified Public Accountant (CPA) is an accountant who has passed specific requirements and examinations in order to become certified. Every state has different requirements for a CPA.   1. California

    • California requires extra courses to be considered for a CPA exam.

      California requires a baccalaureate degree with at least twenty-four additional semester units in accounting, and twenty-four additional hours in business-related courses. You do not have to work, live or have an office in California to get your license. There is not age limit to get your license. There are fees associated with taking the licensure exam.

    Texas

    • Texas requirements differ a little from California

      Texas requires 150 credit hours after earning a baccalaureate to be able to sit for the exam, which California does not. There is no age limit for the exam. Like California, you do not have to live, work or have an office in Texas to take the exam. You also do not have to be a U.S. citizen. You must have a baccalaureate along with at least 30 hours in upper-level accounting and 24 hours of business-related classes.Only accounting classes tested on the CPA exam are counted.

    New York

    • New York requires a wider array of classes to take CPA exam.

      New York also requires 150 additional hours to sit for the exam. They don't have to live, work or have an office in the state. Candidates for the exam must have 150 hours in the following areas: financial accounting and reporting, taxation, cost or managerial accounting, auditing and attestation. Candidates who do not have the 150 hours coursework, may sit for the exam if they have at least 15 years work experience. There is no age minimum and you do not have to be a U.S. resident.

    Alaska

    • Alaska has an age minimum for the exam.

      In Alaska, you may not take the CPA exam if you are younger than nineteen. You have to have 150 additional hours to get the certificate, but do not have to have that many to sit for the exam. Some additional educational requirements are: degree with an accounting concentration; or a minimum of 15 credit hours in accounting; or one year of public accounting experience. An individual is eligible to sit for the exam if they are at least within 18 semester hours of meeting undergraduate degree requirements.
