Founded as Regents College in 1971, Excelsior is a distance learning institution with degree programs available in technology, liberal arts, business, health sciences and nursing. Its nursing school was found to be the largest in the United States by the NLN, with more than 21,000 students--or one out of 10 nursing students in the United States--enrolled in its programs. Excelsior only admits applicants with previous experience as licensed paramedics, nurses or military corpsmen. On average, enrollees have 10 years of experience in the field. Nearly 18,000 of Excelsior's nursing students were studying for their associate's degree, which is usually the educational route that students take to become a registered nurse.
